Ngorongoro Crater was formed some two million years ago when the giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself, the crater is some 2000ft deep and the extinct crater floor covers some 100sq miles. Renowned as a place of absolute wonder, the crater is often referred to as 'Africa's Eden' and the '8th Natural Wonder of the world', this is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in Tanzania, which is dotted with game. Ngorongoro Crater floor is a unique habitat where rich volcanic soil and year round water supply has resulted in a rich and healthy ecosystem supporting approximately 25,000 of Africa's big game. The world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera whose steep sides form a natural enclosure for a wide variety of wildlife including vast herds of Zebra, Gazelle, Wildebeest and of course the infamous Big 5 (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo), Tanzania's few remaining black rhino's are regularly sighted in the crater.

Ngorongoro is on Tanzania's 'northern safari circuit', and receives a good number of visitors year round, safari vehicles descend the steep crater wall every morning and spend the day on vast plains that are teeming with animals. However, the dark of night belongs to the animals, and all vehicles must leave the crater floor by sunset.
