The Kapama Private Game Reserve occupies an immense area between the northern Drakensberg Mountains and the Greater Kruger National Park. It is the largest single-owner game reserve in the entire region and is perfectly situated to receive guests flying into Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit), just minutes from the reserve.
There are four lodges in Kapama; Kapama Lodge, Kapama River Lodge, Kapama Buffalo Camp and Kapama Karula. These camps and lodges can accommodate a total of 208 people between them.
Kapama Game Reserve is in the Limpopo Province, an area which is renowned for outstanding safari holidays. Kapama's 13,000 hectares has all the big game of Africa with 42 mammal species and approximately 350 bird species. This equates to huge natural diversity and includes the famed 'Big 5' - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.
Game drives are conducted through the rolling savannah grasslands and riverine forests that make up this appealing African reserve. Kapama's natural environment and sweetveld ecosystem offers guests the opportunity to have close encounters with all the African animals that traditionally roam this area.
Kapama lodge:
Sweeping views across a tranquil lake create a sentiment of feel-good as soon as you arrive at 5-star Kapama Lodge. The twenty thatched chalets and 2 honeymoon suites offer fresh white bedding surrounded by four great swathes of mosquito netting creating a fairy-tale four-poster effect. The rooms are spacious, air-conditioned and decorated to reflect the rich textures and colours of Africa.
A team of chefs create an array of fine food served in the Kapama Lodge main dining room, the traditional circular outdoor boma lit by lanterns or at a secluded bush venue under a starry African sky. A dip in Kapama Lodge swimming pool is most refreshing when the heat of the African sun becomes too intense and you want to finish your day relaxing on the pool's wooden sundeck which extends right over the lake.
Kapama River Lodge:
The northern Drakensberg mountain range provides a majestic backdrop to the Kapama River Lodge which presents the perfect blend between luxurious safari accommodation and a generous bed capacity of 64 bedrooms. Although large, it is so stylish, roomy and beautifully positioned along a dry riverbed, that guests fall in love with it.
Each spacious room at Kapama River Lodge features a full en-suite bathroom and terrace with uninterrupted views into the leafy-green Big 5 game reserve. Kapama also offers alternative accommodation in spa suites and a specially designed 70 sq metre family room. The central guest entertainment areas include a large swimming pool, long L-shaped relaxation lounge and bar which curves around the pool and on either side is a huge double-sided fireplace creating a wondrous open-plan yet cosy atmosphere.
The River lodge provides three choices of dining venue, all of which cater well for both adventurous and non-adventurous eaters as well as a good choice of vegetarian food.
Buffalo Camp:
Reminiscent of a traditional African safari camp, Kapama Buffalo Camp offers a unique and intimate experience in the African bush. It is ideal for discovering big game Africa in true safari tented style without compromising on comfort.
Eight luxury canvas tents, each sleeping two, are set on wooden decks built on stilts over a steep-sided riverbank. Wooden walkways interconnect the rooms, which are all in the upper reaches of tall riverine trees. The river below rarely flows and antelopes are seen daily walking along the sandy riverbed. Each tented room has all the usual comforts of electricity, en-suite bathroom, safe, writing table, wardrobe and tea/coffee facilities.
The communal areas include a thatched bar, dining room, pool terrace, small pool and campfire. Lanterns, rather than electric lights, glow at night under the trees, creating a special intimate ambience particular to Buffalo Camp. With a maximum of 16 guests at Buffalo Camp, special attention is paid to personal service and the staff become like friends.
The African camp atmosphere is perpetuated at mealtimes with serve-yourself choices presented in heavy African cooking pots over a gentle flame.
Kapama Karula:
Set on the banks of the Klaserie River which flows throughout the year, Kapama Karula – "the place of peace" – is in every way true to its name. This extraordinary camp has recently been rebuilt into one of the finest Camps in Africa. Consisting of seven luxury air-conditioned tents and five large exclusive suites they are the epitome of luxury. Each with a his and hers basin, inside and outside shower and sliding glass doors that will wrap around the suite 260 degrees to offer guest the opportunity to have unrestricted views onto one of the most sought after locations – the Klaserie river. The 115m² suites are air-conditioned and come with every form of luxury most can think of.
The new lounge, dining room, bar, pool and pooldeck as well as other guest entertainment areas will impress the best of connoisseurs. All of course with unrestricted views onto the Klaserie river.

Masai Safari and Gazi Retreat Our holiday to Kenya you arranged was absolutely fabulous from Nairobi,to our last day relaxing at Gazi. Richard celebrated his birthday with Champagne and cake at the Serena Hotel,Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara lodges. The weather was just right for safari not too hot, a thunderstorm developed on return from a late afternoon game drive which we watched whilst swimming in the rain over looking the Masai Mara. The number and variety of animals and birds was over whelming only missing a leopard by seconds but did see quite a few wildebeests and zebra crossing the river and a cheetah with six cubs. Gazi was a delight, relaxing, quiet, the of warmest pools, food served to our perfection and time to suit us . All the staff were so obliging and always smiling and became friends very quickly. Thank you Leanne for all of your assistance.
Travelled on The Great Migration African Safari Holidays itinerary Dear Leanne, we are just dropping you a line to let you know that we had the most wonderful time and the holiday was fantastic. We had a guide all to ourselves the whole time , who was absolutely marvellous and very knowledgeable. The lodges were wonderful and the service was excellent. The Kirawira Tented Camp was out of this world, very luxurious. My only gripe was that our small aircraft flight from the Mara was at 11.00am and our flight home was 11.45pm and we were concerned what we would do with 12 hrs in Nairobi airport. However we were met at the airport and taken to Somack house in the centre of Nairobi, given lunch and the use of washrooms and offered excursions that we could take to fill the time till we flew. We opted to explore the city and they dropped us off and collected us later on at no extra cost which was great. We saw loads, far more than we expected. We even saw the migration of wilderbeast, thousands upon thousands ran right past us it was the most amazing experience. Again thank you for all your help and it was a fantastic trip.
